Gloria!

Gloria’s first day back-to-school is tomorrow.  She is excited!  She has a new face mask with dragonflies.  I can tell she’s nervous.  I have been reassuring her all day that everything will be fine, and I’ve also been listening to her worries.  Stay tuned for tomorrow.

For my new bloggers who are not familiar with Gloria, the is a hallmark in my classroom.  She brings to children diversity, understanding and acceptance.  She joined the classroom after she had been called a ‘witch’ by other children.

Yes, I know, that is shocking.  My preschoolers felt the same way.

Frankly, she is beloved.  She’s the kindest person I know.

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over thirty-five years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

Yay, it’s good to see her again!

  5. Would it ruin her status if she swapped out the witch’s hat for a Tilly hat? No matter, it’s so great to see her again. I bet the kids will be thrilled. It’s thoughtful of her to wear a mask and show the kids that it’s okay to do that.

Children learn by seeing. And they can see how wonderful Gloria is at handling this pandemic. We all can take comfort from that.

    Best wishes, Pete.

  21. I’m glad to see you are able to bring Gloria back to add a bit more “normal” to your classroom life. Having her wear her mask will help with the normal of that too. Maybe she needs her own special hand sanitizer as well? I’m sure the children will have some ideas of what she needs to stay extra safe at this time

    • Jennie says:

Thanks, Lori. Today was her first day, and it was wonderful. Leave it to children to understand and lead the way. They completely understood and loved the face mask. Hand sanitizer never came into play, as they were far more interested in getting to know this new and different person. Blog post pressed for first thing in the morning.
