Edelweiss

Christmas lights and decorations are up.  It feels so good.  Light is joy and hope.

After dinner I put on my jammies and settled in to read my fellow bloggers’ posts.  I had ‘The Sound of Music’ movie in the background.  Every time a song came on, I had to stop and sing (in my heart).

Meanwhile, Hubby had been in his office watching the Science Channel.  He came into the living room just as Edelweiss was playing.

Hubby stopped.  He was glued to the song.  We both smiled all the way through.  Then I told him something about me and music in the classroom:

Steve, this is one of the songs I sing at school all the time.  I sing this in the bathroom changing diapers.  I sing this on the playground.  I sing everything.  Everything.

I tell the children that music goes into your ears, then travels to your brain and to your heart.  I ask them if music makes them feel good.  Of course it does, because the look on their faces tells me so, loud and clear.

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the wind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.”  ~Plato~

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over forty years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

Music does that to most of us. It soothes the heart and soul. Edelweiss is one of my favourite songs. I love your lights. My house is always happier when the Christmas lights are up.

  6. Music has a way of soothing our emotional states … so cheers to you celebrating a song that touches you.

Yes, it does. Thank you, Frank. I’m always surprised at how many different songs pierce my heart. Rodgers and Hammerstein will always be a heartthrob, and so will the Beatles, and R&B, Frank Sinatra, and opera. I guess I’m the lucky one.

The decorations are lovely, and that song is beautiful. That you keep a song in your heart as you move through even the most mundane things in life is one of the things that makes you so special, and such a gift to those children.

OK so how funny is this? You share this today…yesterday on “The Kelly Clarkson Show”, Kelly interviewed Angela Cartwright, who played daughter Brigitta in “The Sound Of Music!” She was wonderful!

That’s sums up this Christmas perfectly.

  17. I leave the radio on all day so that music welcomes me home each time I come back in!
It’s more a year long practice than a Christmas thing with me.

  18. Plato is absolutely correct. I don’t want to live in a world without music. You are preparing the next generation well.

My daughter once recorded herself singing that on a ski slope in Massachusetts where she was shooting a tv show. Great song.

Watching how the seniors respond to music provides further proof of the importance of music. Their toes tap, and they sing along. Everyone knows this, yet at every age, people show how music fills their souls.

You are so right, Pete. Your comment makes me think of seniors and music, and also babies and music. Music grabs you from the beginning and stays on forever. Powerful stuff.

Thank you, Sue! Yes, music is joy and if it can bring magic to children, that is wonderful. Today on the playground I was in the mud kitchen with other children, singing. One of the kindergarteners (a tough kid) said, “You’re singing.” I said, “Yes, I sing all the time.” He stopped and listened. It was a small moment, but we both know the little things are really the big things. Merry Christmas to you, Sue!

  27. Your festive atmosphere sounds delightful! Music truly adds magic to life. Edelweiss is a beautiful choice, and your connection with kids through music is heartwarming. The joy and inspiration you share in your classroom are evident. 🎶✨
