About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over forty years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

The first memory that popped into my head with this meme was a day when we were the only school in the county open. It rarely snows where we live as the temperature is usually moderate. On this rare day, the snow even stuck to the ground. I had only seven kids show up to school that day. Either the adults assumed we were closed or decided to give their kids a rare opportunity to enjoy the snow.

Needless to say, the seven kids who showed up were feeling a bit resentful about being there. It was a no-brainer for me to take them outside and play in the snow with them. I filmed them having fun, and the whole atmosphere changed.

That’s exactly what what you should have done.🙂 Hats off to you for making it fun and changing the atmosphere. I bet those children remember ‘the day Mr. Springer let us play in the snow’.

  3. Very true Jennie! It’s the searching for money that takes up most of our time that interrupts our play time! Then the children grow up and must do the same thing.

Kids need to be let loose to get dirty, have minor knocks and scrapes, and learn about life in the outdoors. The alternative of staying inside and playing video games or watching TV will be more unhealthy in due course.
    Best wishes, Pete.

Yes, yes, yes, says the only adult who had her photo taken with the Easter Bunny last Friday!
