At the end of the road
on my way home from work
this is what I see.

A silhouette against the setting sun.
Dark against light.
A daily reminder of life and hope.
There is always hope.
Always.

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over thirty-five years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

    Almost everyone’s blog is showcasing some kind of hopeful post right now. Some of them are more explicitly about Covid, while others, like yours, are more of a Rorschach ink blot: you can see what you like in it.

    I don’t know–maybe it’s the vaccine trickling down into the general population. My story was all about hope, too.

    Or maybe it’s just coincidence.

    Anyway, I found the use of dark against light interesting and unusual–in a good way. (I mean, you can only rhyme love, dove, and above so many times,) Dark and light are always present, so we’ve got to find hope in those moments.

    Not sure if that’s what you meant, but that’s what I got out of it. Hope that’s okay. : )

      You hit the nail on the head, Cathleen. That’s exactly my feeling, my meaning, although I didn’t purposely go out to find light and dark. I see this every day on my way home and and I’m filled with hope. The dark against the light speaks that way to me. Thank you!

        Yay! I remember in class sometimes being told that a story or poem meant a certain thing and thinking that I would’ve never got that out of it. So, it’s nice to see a message successfully communicated and received! And you’re welcome–it’s a lovely poem. : )

    I wear my black rubber bracelet daily. I bought it from a blind boy who inspired me with his singing. One side reads “HOPE” and the other in braille…the same. We all need reminders to hope….if not, all is lost….hopeless. To hear Christopher Duffley’s song, “Open the Eyes of My Heart” (age 4)….like the “sunrise” in your photo….brought me the HOPE I was aching for. Thanks for posting Jennie.
