His Memory Corner For Milly

A “Memory Corner”

made for Milly

from a child who adored her.

A favorite birthday photo of them together,

laughing and wearing a silly hat.

Tiny treasures carefully and lovingly arranged,

and a note that reads:

“Dear Milly, I hope you are having a good time
in heaven.”

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over forty years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

My son was small when his favorite race car driver, Dale Earnhardt, was killed in a crash. He made a little memorial like this in his play room. It broke my heart.

  11. This is so lovely, Jennie. When my husband’s father died, Gregory drew a family picture and included a drawing of Colin in the clouds in Heaven.

  12. Tammy Hutchinson's avatar Tammy Hutchinson says:

What positive relationships and happiness for so many…I just want to make a web of it! I’m a retired teacher who made Peace books and the like with my classes over the years, and now in later years I am also a quilter. This gave me one of those crazy, manic moments when I want to write a thematic unit with your tributes to Millie as the core text. Thank you for these wonderful posts and for being the teacher you are.

    • Jennie's avatar Jennie says:

That is so nice, Tammy. Thank you! The quilts and Milly just evolved as the years went by. Emergent curriculum at it’s best, I think. I am glad you’re enjoying the series of stories. Much more ahead, including the best Peace Book. Best to you, Tammy.

  13. I am speechless. For a child to understand and put together a memory corner is almost beyond my comprehension. Something in you is touching the core in them. Wow!

  25. You are welcome Jennie. Too often children aren”t given proper space to vent or share their emotions. Improper emotional releases can no doubt, can damage the personality of a child. ❀❀❀❀

  26. Such a sweet and kind gesture
