Magic!

Is there magic?
You bet there is.
It happened at school,
on the playground.

First, the sky changed.

Everyone noticed.
The clouds were announcing something.

We had a pizza party!

After eating pizza, we got our pumpkins ready to
carve into jack-o-lanterns,

And we carved and carved.
We made beautiful jack-o-lanterns.

The sky changed yet again.

Does the sky know magic is happening?
Of course it does.
Nature knows far more than we do.

After looking at our jack-o-lanterns
over and over again
with wide eyes and full hearts,
the best was yet to come.

I called the children to join me.
I had the autoharp.
They knew we were going to sing
The Jack-O-Lantern song.

But now we sang the song in the dark,
with glow sticks, and
holding our jack-o-lanterns.

Magic, indeed!

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over forty years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.
