Late Summer Evenings

The days are shorter.
Light is always a treasure,
but when the days are hot
and the evenings are warm,
I relish the evening shadows
as the sun goes down.

Early evening is a favorite time.
It’s cooled down
and I can be at my favorite place,
The Porch.

This is where I can be,
looking at dusk,
feeling cool,
thinking and writing and reading.
Sometimes I hear a train
which is music to my ears.
I’m taken back to my childhood
growing up in the hills of
West Virginia.

The Porch.
Perhaps it’s the triggering of the senses,
sight and sound
that make me feel so good.
Don’t we all need to feel good?

There are two ways of living life.  One is to live as though nothing is a miracle.  The other is to live as though everything is a miracle.  ~Albert Einstein~

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over forty years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

I love your porch Jennie… I like to think of you taking your ease there!

I love the quote I prefer to live life as if everything is a miracle 💖💖💖💖

There is something about a porch. We had one on the farm too and as a child I spent a lot of time there reading. I don’t have a porch now but I have a terrace and that’s where you will often find me. I love your poem and the Einstein quote. 💖💖

Love that porch, Jennie. There is something special about a porch area and my grandparents used to spend a lot of time there discussing the events of the day, and what might come the next day. Adjacent to the dining room, they (and any of us who just happened to come by for dinner lol) usually headed for there once the meal was over and the weather was welcoming…especially this time of year.

What a lovely screened in porch! I was in a similar one last night (in Northampton at a niece’s home), and it was the best room in the house. The Einstein quotation is terrific. I choose the latter path whenever possible. Thanks for this short, sweet, uplifting blog post, Jennie!

Ooh Jennie that is a lovely porch, over the pond here it would be called a conservatory. 🙂

Sitting within the gloaming of the day is very special.

  8. Nice, Jennie. A good reminder to us to savor every moment.

  9. What a great Einstein quote. That man could really think.

This is a beautiful reminder, Jennie, your report is important. It is real and savoring the special moments along with the ordinary ones. Your porch is beautiful and early evening and early morning are my favorite times of day.

  11. I love that quote! Your porch is lovely. Blue hour is my favorite time of day both in the morning and evening. There’s a peacefulness, and the light and colors at that time of day is so beautiful. Just look how beautiful your golden porch light is with that gorgeous blue sky!

I’ve always wanted a house with a porch but, haven’t ever had one. Now, I’d like to have a screened in back patio. I bought a little 10ft x 10ft screen tent to tide me over. I’ve been loving it.

We are in sync! There’s nothing better, and you said it beautifully. Thank you! I feel lucky to have the porch. We never had one before. I’m glad you have the tent, and I hope you can get a screened in back patio. It opens up the outside to the inside – something you would love..

  12. A delightful and uplifting poem, Jennie. I really like the quote.

  13. Beautiful, Jennie. Love your porch which I’m sure you do as well.

Jennie….your post makes me so happy. I needed to grab a sweater last night when Paul and I sat on the deck and there was a distant train whistle at dusk. Felt like heaven. Thanks for this reminder to pause in these blissful evening moments right now. They’re gonna zip by in a blink! Much love! 💝💝

  15. Oh, I can just feel it sitting on the porch by you. The light and the calm and the shadows; so peaceful. You have taken me back to my days in Ohio, and eventually Illinois. Fall evenings are wonderful. Thank you, Jennie. ☺️

  16. Yes, we need to feel good, and early evening on your porch looks like the perfect way to achieve that! The photo looks so inviting.

  22. love the warmth that radiates from your porch – so lovely! xx

  23. What a lovely porch! Over here we’d call that a conservatory. Whatever, it’s a great place to sit and watch the sun go down.

    • Jennie's avatar Jennie says:

You’re the second person who told me that. I always pictured a conservatory with windows, not screens. It really is a great place to sit and watch a sunset.

  24. Marsha's avatar Marsha says:

You caught everything wonderful about the porch. Even the mosquitos have slowed down as fall approaches. I feel like I’m wrapped in a warm ocean breeze as I sit on the porch in the early evenings. That’s lovely. Soon we will need sweaters to sit on the porch, but for now the air is our light covering.

  25. Lovely and beautiful post dear Jennie. So nice to be sitting at the porch and seeing the beauty all around.

  26. Always welcome dear Jennie ❤️😊🙏
