Children’s Book Discovery

My local library has a huge mural on their main wall in the children’s room.  When you enter, it is across the way, in full view for people to see.  It is bigger than life and attracts everyone.

Including me.

The mural is a painting in an attic.  In the far corner a man is entering and discovers… well, you’ll see.  All the items in the attic are from children’s books.  Some are fairly easy to spot, others are tricky.

Here are pictures from left to right:

The one that stumped me was Virginia Lee Burton’s The Little House.

Have fun!

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over forty years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

This is wonderful. Parents and kids could spend hours, then read the books. I love it.

  5. Every time I start over from left to right I find something I hadn’t seen before! It’s a great mural.

What an amazing mural that must be! You’re lucky to go to see it in person, and I would probably spend a very long time they were looking at every detail.

A beautiful mural perfectly positioned for all to see, and there is a lot to see here!

  8. What a fantastic idea—and very well executed!

  9. What an intriguing way to pique interest in books! I’m wondering if someone (like myself) wanted to know what book went with a certain set of items, if there’s some sort of ‘key’ available? Or, if just asking the librarian would offer the names of said books?

  10. Terrific. Thanks for sharing, Jennie.

  11. What a delightful mural. I think every library should have one. I like the man coming up the attic with the lantern to be surprised by the treasures up there. Does the mural acknowledge the artist?

You’re right about it grabbing one’s attention. I honestly didn’t recognize many of them, but that’s not that surprising since you read far more picture books than me.

It’s definitely an attention grabber. These are not all picture books. Many are classic children’s books. There are some I haven’t found yet. I love an I Spy.

  14. this is a wonderful mural, Jennie. I recognize a lot of the items but not all. Some may be from books I don’t know. Is the man’s half in the cupboard from The Indian in the Cupboard?

  16. Wow, this is gorgeous! Much like the library itself, you wander in and get the privilege of finding all sorts of things you never could have imagined. The artist is very talented.
