The Art Show!

The annual Art Show is up and running.  As always, the art is stellar.  Why?  Because I empower children.  I tell them, “You can do this!”  I show them works of art by the masters – slowly and purposefully.  I start with Starry Night, because it hangs in the classroom.  Then I move to Monet, Picasso, and more.

Can you imagine being a child, looking at significant art, and your teacher telling you, “You can do this?”  It’s enormous for children.

Of course music inspires art, and I bring in my record player and albums.  Children think this is the greatest new technology, so they pay attention and listen.  This year, Four Seasons by Vivaldi and Shout by the Isley Brothers were the big hits.  Don’t you love it?

We walked to the post office.

I showed children their art,
one child at a time.

This is a glimpse.  I hope you can scroll in on some works of art.  Of course children gave their ‘masterpiece’ a title.  Priceless!

They also wrote words to display alongside the art, a big challenge for 3 and 4 year olds.

This year we focused on impressionism, pointillism, cubism
(inspired by Picasso’s The Three Musicians)Also Piet MondrianAnd Henri Rousseau

And of course the Eiffel Tower,
since we learned about France.

Art is unspoken words, with heart.

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over forty years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

Every time you post about the children’s art on display. it makes me tear up. It is just so special. All kids have talent if they are encouraged!

  7. Hurray! The highlight of the year!! I love the minimalist approach to depicting the Eiffel Tower. It reminds me of Picasso’s “Bull Head.”

I always look forward to this, and love to see the originals displayed next to the kids’ versions. They did great, and well done to the Post Office for acting as their gallery for the show!

    Best wishes, Pete.

I’m so glad you enjoy this every year, Pete. Yes, putting a photo of the ‘real deal’ beside the child’s art makes it even more special. The Post Office is perfect, as it central to the town, and their foyer entrance is a huge blank wall with lots of sunlight. Honestly, I would love to do this with children a little older, but I’d need a month with them.

Displaying their work publicly, in the community or within the school, means a great deal to kids and emphasizes that we value art.

You are so right on all counts, Pete. It really does. I would love to do this with older children, K-3, but it would take me a full month.

Hi Jennie, This is simply wonderful!

  19. Amazing work! Thanks to you, they must feel so proud.

  20. I’ve written two poems inspired by paintings of Van Gogh.

Have you heard Don McLean’s song Vincent? It’s a good one. Though it might not be the best one to share in school, since it mentions Van Gogh’s suicide.

    • Jennie's avatar Jennie says:

I often think of van Gogh. Such a sad life, and he only sold one painting. Thank goodness for his brother. I’ve heard the song, but it’s not the best for preschoolers. Thank you, Andrew.
