Community Service in a Different Way

I live in a town, not a city.  It’s not rural, but pretty close.  40+ years ago when we moved here there were no road signs, no traffic lights, and the phone number was just the last five digits.  It was a bit of a culture shock, especially the people.  Oh, the people.  I’m from the south (outgoing and friendly), and these northerners were rather cold.  So it seemed.  I just had to open my eyes… no, my heart.

People did come together.  I just didn’t see that back then.  Fast forward 40 years.  Now, more than ever, people not only come together, they reach out to help others.  Our town delivers food and services to residents, but there is much more.  We have a Community Center that has everything from soup to nuts – everything to bring people together.

Isn’t that what we all want, what we need?

The Prescott Community Center has it all, whether you’re an oldster like me, or a child.

  • History and culture
  • Current events
  • Arts and crafts
  • Dance
  • Performing arts
  • Fitness
  • Science and technology
  • Nature
  • Home and garden
  • Games and recreation
  • Writing and literature

And more!

Here is where community service plays a big part, especially for me:

I was part of the Community Spelling Bee, the big annual fundraiser.  Participants were in groups of four, and my group was from school, Groton Community School.  We were Three Blind Mice and the Big Cheese.

Although we did not win (who knew daiquiri had three’i’s’?), we had so much fun!

We did get second place in the Humorous Costume award.

What’s really important here?

I saw many past families and people in my community I don’t see often.  Connection.  I was part of something bigger.  I was part of my community.  I was helping.

My library reading groups are my community service, yet this is so much more.  Thank you, Prescott Community Center.  Groton has come a long way.  I have, too.

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over forty years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

Great spirit, Jenneie*. Was that you waving the cane?
*if daiquiri can have 3 i’s, then Jenneie can have 3 e’s…at least this one time.

  11. Oh Jennie you all look so good in those costumes, A shame you didn’t win.. But it sounds like your town and community are the Winners for being such a kind and helpful community…

I love seeing people coming together for either community service or fun events. Many times, those two things can merge. For those who feel lonely, this is one of the best ways to meet new people.

  13. Thank you for sharing the videos. What a hoot! In the small towns in my area, the public libraries are functioning as community centers—on a much smaller scale, of course, but the feeling is the same.

Even after she moved out of town, my mother frequented the Groton Center run by the town’s Council on Aging off the West Groton Road, such was the attraction of the town and people.

Yes! And I still want to call it the Senior Center. It is thriving. Prescott School has truly become a venue for most everything for all ages. It’s wonderful.

  15. What a supportive community – and you’re a part of that supportiveness!

  16. What a lovely reflection. A beautiful reminder of what truly matters.

    3 I’s… who knew? 🌹🌟

  18. You get the 1st place in my book Jennie!

  19. Loved watching all of you on the videos. I’m a fan of small towns as well but like them to be slightly closer to a big city then we are here. Community service benefits the giver and the gifted. Everyone wins.

We take “community” seriously. . .but not ourselves. You and your team brought fun to all that night and perhaps a reminder that joy is important, no matter the season. Thank you for being game!

    • Jennie's avatar Jennie says:

Well said, Megan! That’s ‘real’ community. Many thanks, our team had so much fun. You hit on the most important word, joy. I was there on Thursday to see my former preschool students in a play performance, and joy was the operative word. Thank you for all you do!

  21. Sounds just as a community should be, Jennie (great costumes by the way!).

  22. Hi Jennie, this sounds like a lot of fun. We used to have events like this when Greg was at school.

I love it. Activities like these not only bring communities together, but are usually a lot of fun. You sure know how to enjoy yourself, Jennie.
