Thanking a Veteran

‘Thank You’
are the all-important words
in life.
They’re especially important
on Veterans Day.

Major General Z
now retired
visited my classroom.
We wanted to thank him.
Children were in awe.

As soon as The General talked with children
it was bees to honey,
answering questions,
showing them his pins and ribbons,
parachute and helicopter.
He was in the Army 82nd Airborne Division
and so much more.

Children shook his hand
to say ‘thank you’.
This child speaks Russian
and so does The General.
They had a lively conversation.

We sang “God Bless America ”
Actually, we belted it out.
The YouTube above is almost as good as the children.
Children love this song.
They know it’s important.
It feels good.
We learned to stand proud and tall,
and put our hand on our heart.

Children wanted The General
to salute the American flag.
That was a jaw-dropping moment.

We presented
The General
with the best book, ever
The Star-Spangled Banner.

A final thank you
to The General
and his lovely wife- a dear friend.

Thank a veteran.
Freedom is not free.
Never forget. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over forty years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

Me too, Jacqui! When our son was a Plebe, he did the ‘bathrobe bet’ with The General for the Army/Navy game. So now he has an Army bathrobe. I’ll never forget the day he went to The General’s house to pick it up (he was so nervous), and The General pulled out his West Point Bugle Notes from when he was a Plebe, which is almost identical to the Naval Academy’s Reef Points. Am I bringing back memories for you? He took so much time with our son- such a nice guy. No wonder the children loved his visit.

So glad to see the emphasis on veterans and service in your classroom, Jennie. Children of any age should be in awe of those who serve, and especially those who serve our great country. Thanks to your husband for his service, as well.

Thank you, Steve. I feel the same way, and I’ll always bring veterans into my class to help children understand and appreciate their service. I’ll pass your thanks along to Hubby!

One of the things you’re so good about is to help your students understand the importance of our Veterans. My favorite part was reading about the General and the child having a conversation in Russian.

That was an unexpected and pleasant surprise. I love when those moments ‘just happen’. Thanks so much, Pete. I will always bring veterans and patriotism into the classroom.
