The Carle, and More

I never tire of visiting the the Eric Carle Museum, because every visit has something new and exciting.  Yes, every visit.

I had no idea his favorite color was yellow.
No wonder he has created so many suns.

This is the first photo I have seen with
the Very Hungry Caterpillar
perched on Eric Carle’s shoulder.

I have read this over and over again.  It’s powerful.
I want to yell and jump up and down, because this is the fundamental way to introduce young children to art and literature.

When Eric Carle died, this was the cover of the New York Times Magazine.  No words needed, his shoes say it all.

One of my favorite authors, Astrid Sheckels, has written a new book.
It is always exciting to listen to an author present their book and having a meet & greet at the book signing.

Walter the sea dog from Astrid’s previous book, Sea Dog is part of this new and wonderful alphabet book, Sea Dog Boats.

Here I am, under an Eric Carle tree.  Lucky me!

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over forty years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

  1. He certainly left his mark, and it was a good one.

  2. Hi, Jennie! I apologize for missing a lot of your last postings. Carle was a very power- ful artist. He brought the colors to the maximum of glow. And he had German roots. 😉 Thanks for this great remembrance on him. Best wishes, Michael

No apologies necessary, Michael. You are right about Carle. Just think, if he had not been in Germany during WWII, he might have never seen the art that changed his life, thanks to his art teacher. Best to you.

The shoes probably struck me most of all. I had not seen the magazine, either. A perfect example of ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’, right?

Hi Jennie, those shoes really do say a lot – and I am glad you get something out of every visit to the museum. Eric Carle brought so much to children and for some reason, I am thinking of Snail Home right now – even though I liked so many of his books. We still have an audio recoding of my Mother-n-Law singing TODAY IS MONDAY – which is one of my favs…. (all you hungry children, come and eat it up)

Astrid has talent and the Sea Dog is a book I want to read to my nieces

    • Jennie's avatar Jennie says:

Yes, the shoes do, and yes I do. Thank you so much, Prior. Are you thinking of House For Hermit Crab? I love that book. You are very lucky to have a recording of Today is Monday. Astrid’s books are wonderful! She has a sequel to Sea Dog coming out!
