Halloween At School

~Happy Halloween~

Today at school was a Day in the Dark.
Children wore pajamas.
Gloria did, too.

We played with glow sticks and
black playdoh on tin foil.

We built with MagnaTiles
creating structures that housed light.

We painted with glow-in-the-dark-paint
and used a blacklight to see our art.

Halloween can be scary, and children can be apprehensive.  Instead of costumes, we wear pajamas to school (teachers, too) and collect non-perishable breakfast food items for our local food pantry.  Giving always feels good.

Jennie

P.S.  Gloria is going Trick-Or-Treating.  The child tells me she is going to be a ghost.

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over forty years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

wonderful, wonderful. a great way to celebrate. I will be a piñata and my co-teachers will be candy. we really try to keep it low key for the littles, as it can be scary

As always, you gave the kids a wonderful experience, and donating food to a food bank was the icing on the cake.
    Best wishes, Pete.

What a fun day. I think it’s pretty cool that Gloria is going trick or treating – who gets her candy? I mean, I’m sure she shares.

I love that you find a way to celebrate without the scary aspects of the day, which will become a new thrill for them when they are old enough to handle it!

Another precious time for the kids, Jennie. How was the child selected to have Glorigo trick or treating with her?a on Halloween. I imagine a lot of them wanted to

    • Jennie's avatar Jennie says:

Thank you Don. It was a precious day. Selecting Gloria was ‘first come first serve’ from the parents asking to take Gloria. Yes, many children wanted to take her, but children are very resilient. They can ‘move on’ easily, and they did. Their parents signed up for other weekends. The one child who was really begging will be taking her home for Thanksgiving. I heard she was going to be a ghost tonight. I can’t wait to find out tomorrow.

You pick the best activities for your students, Jennie. From a parent’s or child’s perspective, what’s not to like?
