A Magical Evening at School

As the sky darkened,
families enjoyed a pizza dinner on the playground.
It was the first time everyone was together.

Families brought pumpkins and went to work
carving them into jack-o-lanterns.
We set all the jack-o-lanterns along the stone wall.
Families looked and smiled,
as if it were their ‘magnum opus’.

Then we gathered in a big circle,
each child and family holding their jack-o-lantern,
snuggling together.
It was dark.
We gave children glow sticks.
I played the autoharp so we could sing our favorite song,
“The Jack-O-Lantern Song.”
Music was the frosting on the cake.
Magic happened at school.

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over forty years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

I really like that you involve your families, Jennie. There are too many teachers who avoid this, which makes no sense to me. Why wouldn’t you want the parents’ support?

You’re so right, Pete. The younger the child, the more important it is to have family support. Plus, it creates a fun, loving atmosphere. Many thanks!
