Elsie the Borden Cow

Elsie the Borden Cow was part of my childhood.  She made the best ice cream, and I have fond memories of summers standing in line to get her ice cream.

Guess what?  I am welcoming Elsie into my heart – literally.  Elsie’s valve is now part of my heart, replacing the old one that was ‘rusty’.  The valve choices are either a pig or cow, and I’m so glad I got the cow.  Elsie.  Now my childhood is deep inside my heart forever.  Isn’t that wonderful!

Jennie

P.S. I will be catching up on reading your blogs.

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over thirty-five years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

    • Jennie says:

Will do! I have to remember these old bones don’t heal right away. Today I tried to do a little slow walking, which was a mistake. So now I am doing nothing except watching the Repair Shop and reading. Best to you, Pete.

That is somewhat extraordinary news — shared in a gentle and playful manner. Rest and recover well!!!

    • Jennie says:

Thank you, Will. I did not want to worry everyone, as this was serious surgery. I’m glad it came across as gentle and playful! Bless Elsie! I am definitely doing nothing. 🙂

Jennie, this is udderly great news. Stay well and keep us updated.

  10. Good news, will you be moo-ing for the children? 🙂

  11. I had a toy Elsie as a child; her head and hooves were molded rubber, her body blue plush (I don’t know why), and she had a daisy-printed yellow ribbon around her neck. I have often wondered what became of her.

I’m glad Elsie is part of you, Jennie.

  12. oh wow – wish you a speedy recovery

  13. Darlene says:

I too recall Elsie. I’m so glad she will be part of you. Take care and rest. Sending love and hugs. xo

  14. I didn’t know they replaced valves? I hope things work out fine for you Jennie!

    • Jennie says:

They do! I’ve learned more about heart valves than I ever wanted to know. Ha! There are four, and they can become calcified and not open and close properly- much like a rusty hinge. The new valve goes right inside the the old one. Very cool.
Thank goodness for modern, less invasive surgery, and for good Boston hospitals. I just need to do nothing for a while. Interestingly, there is no pain, except at the groin entry. I just feel like a 90-year-old, but I’m on the mend! Many thanks, Wayne.

  15. sandrah says:

Elsie the cow! I’d forgotten about her! I hope your recovery process goes well!

The situation is a little terrifying to hear about but I am pleased that your renewed friendship with a childhood friend is going to be strong and long lasting.

    • Jennie says:

Well, it was major surgery, which is terrifying. I didn’t want to worry my blogger friends, and thought Elsie would put a smile on everyone. I think she did! A renewed friendship in the best of ways! Thank you, Pam.

  18. Elsie to the rescue! Glad she can be of service once again, Jennie. I wish you all the best towards a quick, speedy recovery.

  24. petespringerauthor says:

You’ve still retained your spirit and positive attitude. My dad had a pig’s valve replacement. Science and medicine are truly amazing!

    • Jennie says:

I have, Pete- even though I feel like a 90-year-old. Successful valve, but slow recovery. Had I gotten a pig valve, I would be Charlotte, of course. 🙂
