Elsie the Borden Cow was part of my childhood. She made the best ice cream, and I have fond memories of summers standing in line to get her ice cream.
Guess what? I am welcoming Elsie into my heart – literally. Elsie’s valve is now part of my heart, replacing the old one that was ‘rusty’. The valve choices are either a pig or cow, and I’m so glad I got the cow. Elsie. Now my childhood is deep inside my heart forever. Isn’t that wonderful!
Jennie
P.S. I will be catching up on reading your blogs.

About Jennie
I have been teaching preschool for over thirty-five years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about.
I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.
Great to hear Elsie is working well for you, dear Jennie. Get your rest, and come back stronger than ever!
Best wishes, Pete. x
Will do! I have to remember these old bones don’t heal right away. Today I tried to do a little slow walking, which was a mistake. So now I am doing nothing except watching the Repair Shop and reading. Best to you, Pete.
Thank goodness for Elsie! I do remember her fondly. I hope you and that special valve continue to do well.
Thanks so much, Barb. I always loved her.
Oh wow! Rest up and recover well, Jennie 💛
Thanks, Ritu! I didn’t want to worry anyone as this was serious. I’m just glad it went well. I do love Elsie!
🤗🤗🤗
🥰 ❤️ 😍
I remember Elsie from my childhood as well. I hope your recuperation continues to go well!
Thanks so much, Liz. I’m glad surgery went very well. Thank goodness for Boston hospitals. Now, I have to remember I’m not 30-something, and give my sore body time to heal. Good thing Elsie is there to help!
You’re welcome, Jennie. Now you get a chance to enjoy any of those restful activities we usually don’t have time for.
Exactly! 😀
I remember elsie and so happy she is continuing to be a positive part of the world, especially yours! amazing. get all the rest and relaxation you need – ❤
She was a childhood favorite. I’m so glad you remember her, too! I will be good with R&R. Today I tried to take a very slow short walk to the barn…not good. So ‘nothing’ is the plan! Thank you, Beth! 🥰
an excellent agenda
🙂
That is somewhat extraordinary news — shared in a gentle and playful manner. Rest and recover well!!!
Thank you, Will. I did not want to worry everyone, as this was serious surgery. I’m glad it came across as gentle and playful! Bless Elsie! I am definitely doing nothing. 🙂
Jennie, may your recovery be gentle, swift, and as amazing as you. Thank you, Elsie. 💕🙏🏻🙏🏻 praying now!!
Thank you so much! Yes, Elsie is the best!
You’re welcome, Jennie! 💛
Wishing you a speedy recovery !! Take care!! ♥️🌻♥️
Many thanks, Andrea!
Jennie, this is udderly great news. Stay well and keep us updated.
Steve, you made me laugh out loud!! Many thanks!
I had more but didn’t want you to get too excited.
Thank you! I’m not supposed to belly laugh yet! 😂
Then you better not read my recent story. I’m not responsible😉
I will get to your story, Steve. I want to laugh! This is a sloooow heal, so thank you for being patient. The heat doesn’t help, either.
No, no, no, I recommend that you wait until completely healed. Laughing is good for you but guffawing might be too much. I highly recommend that you use your visualization skills when you do read it. As for now, go out back and eat some grass. Watch out for any electric fences
You’re the best, Steve. I’ll be mooving right along. 😅
Good news, will you be moo-ing for the children? 🙂
Haha! I might try to find an Elsie doll. That would be fun. Thanks, FR!
Praying for complete healing!
Thank you!
I had a toy Elsie as a child; her head and hooves were molded rubber, her body blue plush (I don’t know why), and she had a daisy-printed yellow ribbon around her neck. I have often wondered what became of her.
I’m glad Elsie is part of you, Jennie.
Oh, my! I would love to find a toy Elsie. Lucky you, Sharon! Yes, I’m glad Elsie is part of me, too. Thank you!
oh wow – wish you a speedy recovery
Thank you!
I too recall Elsie. I’m so glad she will be part of you. Take care and rest. Sending love and hugs. xo
Thanks so much, Darlene! I’m glad Elsie is there to help. 😀
I didn’t know they replaced valves? I hope things work out fine for you Jennie!
They do! I’ve learned more about heart valves than I ever wanted to know. Ha! There are four, and they can become calcified and not open and close properly- much like a rusty hinge. The new valve goes right inside the the old one. Very cool.
Thank goodness for modern, less invasive surgery, and for good Boston hospitals. I just need to do nothing for a while. Interestingly, there is no pain, except at the groin entry. I just feel like a 90-year-old, but I’m on the mend! Many thanks, Wayne.
amazing what they can do these days!
take care!
Truly amazing! Thanks, Wayne.
Elsie the cow! I’d forgotten about her! I hope your recovery process goes well!
I’m glad you remember her! Many thanks, Sandrah.
It is fitting that Else is in your heart, Jennie. I hope you have a speedy recovery.
I think it is very fitting, too. Thank you, John. I’m on the mend.
Do I need to send some VooDoo Ranger or bourbon to help mend?
Now you’re talkin! 😎
Yay.
The situation is a little terrifying to hear about but I am pleased that your renewed friendship with a childhood friend is going to be strong and long lasting.
Well, it was major surgery, which is terrifying. I didn’t want to worry my blogger friends, and thought Elsie would put a smile on everyone. I think she did! A renewed friendship in the best of ways! Thank you, Pam.
Elsie to the rescue! Glad she can be of service once again, Jennie. I wish you all the best towards a quick, speedy recovery.
She was definitely to the rescue! Thanks so much!
What a “jennie” way to let us know of your situation…
Take care, teacher.
I tried to break the news in a Jennie way. I’m glad it worked! Thanks so much, Laura.
Remember her “husband” Elmer the Bull?
Yes!! He is still famous for Elmer’s glue, which we use at school. Thanks, Mike.
Take good care of yourself Jennie so glad Elsie could help. Relax and rest!
Thanks so much, Sandra. I will!
I remember Elsie fondly, Jennie. I think she’s lucky to have a place in your heart.
I feel the same way, Dan. I found an Elsie doll on Amazon, and thought the children might like it. We’ll see.
Oh, Jennie! I didn’t realize you were having that kind of trouble. I love your spirit. And I always loved Elsie too. Hugs on the wing.
I didn’t want to worry everyone, and then it came to me how I could tell my fellow bloggers- Elsie! Many hugs so you, Teagan!
You’ve still retained your spirit and positive attitude. My dad had a pig’s valve replacement. Science and medicine are truly amazing!
I have, Pete- even though I feel like a 90-year-old. Successful valve, but slow recovery. Had I gotten a pig valve, I would be Charlotte, of course. 🙂
Sounds like you’re in for an op. If so bon chance!!
It was quite the serious surgery, but successful. I’m on a slow mend.
I wish you a speedy recovery, Jennie. I hope you’ll be mooving along soon.
Hahaha!! Thank you, Norah!
It is said that laughter is the best medicine, but sometimes it needs a little help from medical professionals too. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. 💖
It does! Best to you, Norah, and many thanks.😍
Best to you, Jennie. 💖
Recovery requires rest, Jennie. Please take it easy and let Elsie adapt.
I will, Don. Got home Saturday, on Monday I took a very slow walk to the barn…not a good idea. So, I am slowly on the mend.
Oh Jennie
Best wishes with your new valve and healing
God bless you
Thank you!
Jennie, I am so happy that everything went well for you, and I am sending all good thoughts to you for a complete and speedy recovery.
Thank you, Charles! It’s a slow recovery, but I’m getting there. 🙂
Wishing you a relaxed and speedy recovery, Jennie!! All the best!!! I LOVE cows (like I really LOVE them… a bit of an obsession lol)..
Thanks, Jen. I actually found a vintage Elsie doll on Amazon. 🙂
Take care Jennie ..and start writing once again with full force .I do love to read your posts .
Will do, and thank you!
That is amazing.I didn’t know they did that, Jennie. Thanks for sharing that.
Glad you enjoyed it, Jacqui!
I am happy to hear that you are doing well with Elsie’s valve. Take care of yourself, let yourself heal, and come back strong.
Thanks so much, Carla! 😍
Oh wow, Jennie, I didn’t know you’d had a heart operation. Wishing you all the best with your recovery.
Thank you, Robbie. It was serious, but I’m on the mend. My bad valve has been worsening for a long time, so I knew surgery was coming at some point. As of today it’s been one week and I’m finally feeling better.
I am so glad to know that, Jennie.
Thanks so much, Robbie. ❤️
best of luck. and remember, if it’s Borden, it’s got to be good!
Oh my goodness, I’d forgotten that Borden quote. Thanks, Jim! I’m on the mend. 🙂
I’m happy to hear that you are on the mend! Must be that Borden quality 🙂
Haha! Must be. 😀
👍
Nice
Thank you.
Elsise I can remember since child hood and my family sold milk to boardens for many years they make the best ice cream for sure
That is something else! Great memories.

Okay what?????????? Did I miss something? Omg Jennie. If you’re posting this now I know you’re doing well! Oye! Get some rest Warrior Woman – and Elsie ❤ xx
I know…. I couldn’t just write “I’m having heart surgery.” Gulp! So, I thought Elsie would be a good way to explain that. The surgery was serious, but it went very well. I’m slowly healing. It’s hard for me to sit still, and if I do a little too much I feel it. All in all, W.W. is on the mend. 😀
Thank goodness!!!! Keeping you in my healing prayers. ❤
Thanks so much, Debby!
