Flowers and Children

Spring
Flowers are blooming.
Children are, too.
A blossom is a smile,
a warm hug,
the feeling of goodness,
a garden of children.

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over forty years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

I was never a gardener until I was 50. And now, it is a parallel with children. Lucky me. Kindergarten is German for garden of children, but you probably know that.

      • Yes, I knew that. I think I went to a day care for a little while in Germany. It may have been a kind of pre-school. I did Kindergarten here. I do know it was nothing like what we have here. You are still the best gardener of children I know. That’s a big and important job.

I like the analogy of flowers and children blooming.

    • Jennie's avatar Jennie says:

The word kindergarten is German. Kinder means children and garten means garden. So every spring when the flowers bloom, I always think of kindergarten, a garden of children.

  16. This is a delightful poem, Jennie. Children are just like flowers.

The fact that so many come back and see you long after they have left shows that you have not only helped them bloom, but nurtured their growth too. 🙂
    Best wishes, Pete.
