Saddle Up Saloon; Story Time!

I am thrilled to be featured on Saddle Up Saloon over at the Carrot Ranch. Pal and Kid had a rootin’ tootin’ time interviewing me. Boy, did we ever have fun talking about children’s books, reading, teaching, and much more.

“A preschool teacher walks into a saloon—”

“Oh, I think I know this one Pal. Eats shoots and leaves?”

“What? No, Kid! Look, here comesJennie Fitzkee, a preschool teacher. Howdy Jennie!”

“Hello Pal, hello Kid.”

“Preschool? School prior to school? What age are your students?”

“My students are three and four years old Kid.”

“How’d ya git inta the pre-school teacher gig?”

“Back in the day, most women had three career choices— teacher, secretary, or nurse. I always enjoyed babysitting and playing with my younger sisters, so teaching was a natural choice for me. I have been teaching for thirty-seven years!”

“Must be ya love what ya do, Jennie.”

“I sure do, Pal. I have always taught preschool, no other grade. Lucky me! The best thing about being a preschool teacher is making a real difference. And that happens in small and unexpected moments. The little things are…

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over thirty-five years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

That was fun going out West with you for an interview. Where can I find the two books you wrote?

    • Jennie says:

I’m glad you enjoyed going out west! My two books are ready to query to lit agents. I have a good friend who worked at Harper Collins. She is outstanding at finding the right agents to query. So, I need to finish that letter and send the books off. Jennie, stop dragging your feet!

Interestingly, she told me that in today’s market, an agent is looking at the writer, not just the book, so having two written plus a few decades of children’s literature behind me will hopefully pay off.

Thirty-seven years-what a treasure you are, Jennie. Oh, the fun we could have had. Doing things like Rapper Jennie was right in my wheelhouse. We were forever dressing up and having fun with our students. Newsflash to all the teachers—you can teach and have fun at the same time.

    • Jennie says:

Pete, we would have had a blast teaching together. Did you ever wear a pink tutu on your head like hair? Like you, I am spontaneous, and capture the fun for children. We both know there are layers to doing this – understanding children, years of experience that tell us when it’s okay, and the sheer bravery to jump off the diving board. I think by doing so, we give children a better education.

The new teachers… they are wonderful. Yes, newsflash! They may have more energy than I do, but I let them see me in my ‘fun way’ whenever I have a chance. And we talk.

  8. At first sorry for the delay, Jennie! Then “HAPPY NEW YEAR”! I hope you and yours had a great start into 2021, and enjoy – beside all social distancing – the more daylight.
What a great interview! Thank you for mentioning! Michael
