“Day is Done”

After Thanksgiving dinner, this was the sunset. I was overcome.

I started to sing this song. I don’t know why, perhaps it was the family and the memories back inside the house, but I know I had to sing it.  And I did.  It was just me and the sunset and memories.  I sang this song every sunset when I was a child at summer camp.  To me it was soulful.  It’s the lyrics to “Taps.”

Day is done,

Gone the sun,

From the hills,

From the lake,

From the skies,

All is well,

Safely rest,

God is nigh.

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over thirty-five years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

Good way to cap the day off. I remember going to summer camp and we were allowed to visit in our tents/cabins until we heard Taps.

ooh, what memories! I used to sing it too. Slightly different words “from the sea . . ” We lived by the ocean.

    • Jennie says:

I’m glad you have those memories, too, Pam. It’s a wonderful song to sing at sunset. I think there are more verses, including the sea, but I only remember singing the first part.

  9. Reading this & singing it in my mind…gave me goose bumps (we say ‘pimples’ but doesn’t quite look right on the page!)
A fitting end to a splendid Day.

  10. “Taps” is a very comforting song. We would do well to end every day with it.

  11. Ren says:

Do kids these days even know what “Taps” is?
    Beautiful scene and song.

  15. A simple song that says so much. Thanks for sharing the moment with us, Jennie. : )

  16. Elizabeth says:

All the campers gathered around the flag pole as taps was played, we sang and the flag came down. It was very exciting when our cabin got to do the flag ceremony. We had to be very meticulous and coordinated with the folding.

  17. srbottch says:

A peaceful way to end the day. The Boy Scouts would sing it at days end on camp outs. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving, Jennie.

    • Jennie says:

It was fitting, Steve. You know the feeling from when you were a Boy Scout. Hope you’re enjoying the holiday season. Stay warm on your street corner. 🙂

      • srbottch says:

I never got to be a Scout, as a boy. My friend and I acted like jerks at the intro mtg (7 yr old jerks) and our mother’s said, “That’s it, no scouts!” But, our son became a Scout, an Eagle, and I was involved with the staff. A great organization! He was here with his wife and twin 3 yr olds for Thanksgiving. We had a good time. Hope you enjoyed the holiday, Jennie. Did you cook dinner?

      • Jennie says:

Becoming an Eagle Scout is a great accomplishment. Wonderful that your son made it. At least you got to be the parent of a Scout. 🙂 Sounds like a wonderful family Thanksgiving. Twin three year olds? Wow! I have the same in my class. Are you reading aloud? We had a great Thanksgiving with our son and his family. Best to you, Steve.

      • srbottch says:

Yes, both Grandma and Grandpa read ‘The Little Blue Truck’. Granddaughter, in particular, was very attentive.

      • Jennie says:

I love that book! You picked a winner. And thank you for the photo. ❤️

  18. I think in your good climatic conditions I would also sing this beautiful song.;-) Thank you for sharing Jennie, and have a beautiful week. Michael
