After Thanksgiving dinner, this was the sunset. I was overcome.
I started to sing this song. I don’t know why, perhaps it was the family and the memories back inside the house, but I know I had to sing it. And I did. It was just me and the sunset and memories. I sang this song every sunset when I was a child at summer camp. To me it was soulful. It’s the lyrics to “Taps.”
Day is done,
Gone the sun,
From the hills,
From the lake,
From the skies,
All is well,
Safely rest,
God is nigh.

Good way to cap the day off. I remember going to summer camp and we were allowed to visit in our tents/cabins until we heard Taps.

ooh, what memories! I used to sing it too. Slightly different words “from the sea . . ” We lived by the ocean.
I’m glad you have those memories, too, Pam. It’s a wonderful song to sing at sunset. I think there are more verses, including the sea, but I only remember singing the first part.
Reading this & singing it in my mind…gave me goose bumps (we say ‘pimples’ but doesn’t quite look right on the page!)

I have often thought the same thing. Hearing it at the end of every day would make a difference, at least in our hearts.

All the campers gathered around the flag pole as taps was played, we sang and the flag came down. It was very exciting when our cabin got to do the flag ceremony. We had to be very meticulous and coordinated with the folding.
Wonderful memories, Elizabeth. I’m glad you experienced this song, too. My camp didn’t have cabins doing the ceremony and folding the flag. We just sang the song, all together, at sunset.
I liked the reverence of the flag ceremony. My family was unchurched and I had few opportunities like that until I grew up.
I like that, too. My family was churched, yet I had few opportunities as well.

I never got to be a Scout, as a boy. My friend and I acted like jerks at the intro mtg (7 yr old jerks) and our mother’s said, “That’s it, no scouts!” But, our son became a Scout, an Eagle, and I was involved with the staff. A great organization! He was here with his wife and twin 3 yr olds for Thanksgiving. We had a good time. Hope you enjoyed the holiday, Jennie. Did you cook dinner?
