Real Heroes

There are sad events in life that turn into goodness for others.  Gabi’s Bears is a case in point.  It started as a local fundraiser in a small Massachusetts town, after cancer had taken Gabi away.  Buy a bear to be given to a pediatric patient and donated to MGH (Mass General Hospital).

The fundraiser was so successful that the two women who made the bears decided to do more.  They made countless bears.  It was a labor of love.

Over fifty bears were initially delivered to MGH.  These heroes will be delivering more, in bunches of fifty, every few months.
And all those bears go into the arms of children who need a lovey, want to hug and love a bear.

At school, bears and loveys are important for children.  They are the ‘go to’ at nap time and when things aren’t going well.  I have a great understanding and respect for loveys.  They can make all the difference in the world for a child.

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over thirty-five years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

  16. Such a sweet story, Jennie. One of the many I read about people stepping out of their pain to bring joy to others in memory of a loved one. I love the bears. No matter what you see on the news, you see the goodness in the world. Thanks for sharing this. Sending Thanksgiving hugs.

I feel exactly the same way, Marlene. People who go above and beyond to do good things for others are heroes, and they should be the stories on the news. The bears are adorable, I’d love to be a fly on the wall when a child gets one. ❤️

I’m so glad that you decided to write about this sweet story, Jennie. We shouldn’t bury our heads in the sand when things around us are wrong, but there is so much good in the world as well. Kudos to these ladies for bringing joy to children in the most challenging of situations.

  18. Pediatric cancer is so cruel, anything that can bring a bit of comfort is a blessing. And to think, each one of those many, many bears keeps the memory of Gabi alive.
