Poetry – The Small things – a poem about what really counts.

Lovely poem. It is the small things that matter most. In fact, the small things are truly the big things.

Poetry – The Small things – a poem about what really counts.

If life has taught me any lessons it is that there are never any short-cuts that don’t end up costing you, no quick fixes that put things right and that anything worthwhile is always about the details. The small things are really the biggest. They are the things that make the difference. They show you really care.

It’s the little things.

It’s the little things.

It is always the little things;

The touch of a hand,

A kind word,

A voice that sings;

The smile of a child

The caress of a breeze,

The flash of the wings.

That’s what warms the heart,

Gives strength to the mind

And gifts power

To everything you find.

For the little things

Are bigger than you think.

They provide the link.

It’s always the little things

That mean the most.

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over thirty-five years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

    This poem is so beautiful! If printed and framed it would be perfect placed next to one of my favorite Robert Brault quotes : “Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” Thank-you so much for sharing!
