My Summer Children

Children are a wonder.

Nature is a wonder, too.

Both grow, with the help of loving adults.

I take care of my ‘summer children.’

My eyes are witness to life, and sometimes death.  I see beauty, and I am humbled by my  ever changing ‘children’.  They all have names, of course.  Mister Mica is the beautiful protector.  Tropicana gives everyone orange brilliance.  The hand carved Huntington fish is playful.  Ted, (not shown) the really big fish, is Hubby’s brother.  Flashy shimmers when the sun goes down.  So does Jewels.  The list is a long one.  It is our wonderful family.

From flowers to fish, these are my ‘summer children’, and my little piece of heaven.

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over thirty-five years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

Relax and charge those batteries with your Summer children. You give so much. You have to give to yourself in order to have the energy for them.

  11. Ellen says:

And lovely summer children they are, the fishes and the flowers! The June page on one of my numerous calendars displayed a lovely wreath of flowers surrounding this quote : “Summertime is always the best of what might be.” – Charles Bowdon. Thank-you!

    • Jennie says:

Thank you, Ellen. These summer children make me stop and smell the roses, thankfully. Your quote is perfect. And, I ordered the book you recommended. 😀

I’m so chuffed to know that I’m not the only one who names flowers, and other things. My vacuum cleaner is Bertha, my laptop is BD (short for Baby Dell), my last car was Sadie Mae, and my flowers are a variety of names, mostly feminine, but there are a few males in the bunch! And, the bumblebee that comes and talks to me each morning as I water the flowers is Ferdie, named after a friend in Ghana.
