More by the Pool – Bravery

Did you ever eat dinner in the pool?
Not by the pool, in the pool.

It happened like this
The children had been brave all afternoon,
jumping onto rafts without adult hands,
mastering super soakers,
and playing in the deep end.
When pizza arrived for dinner,
I walked to the pool stairs and gave a nod of the head
and a smile at the children.
They joined me in a heartbeat.
The other adults missed the adventure.
Hooray for children, bravery, and eating pizza in the pool.
Not a morsel was dropped.

About Jennie

I have been teaching preschool for over forty years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

This looks like so much fun. And why stop the fun to get out of the water to eat? There is a scene I love in Gerald Durrell’s book My Family and Other Animals where the mother sets the table in the sea and serves the meal there. Everyone eats in the water.

Aww, Jennie! The bravery, fun, and happy faces! You 3 are not only brave and fun…but great inspiration for the “dry” eaters! Yay! ❤️

Pizza works, but I wouldn’t let them eat spaghetti in the pool.

  6. That was brave. In my house (long ago), there would have been more than a morsel dropped!

  7. Excellent summer time fun, and memories being made and shared!!

I have never had a pool, so have never eaten beside one or in one. But it looks like the kids had a real treat! 🙂
    Best wishes, Pete.

I can honestly say I never have. Maybe I never thought about it, maybe I never had the bravery. Kudos!

Many times one or another of us would refuse to get out of the water long enough to eat, so we definitely ate in the water. Most times though it was the ocean.

  13. Great idea, Jennie. You are certainly enjoying your pool.

How cool you are Jenny, not just in a pool! Taking the grandtwins to Hawaii for their 5th b’day. Whoo Hoo!

I would eat pizza just about anywhere, and swimming pools are needed often these days.

That sounds like a win-win to me! Thanks, Pete.

How about eating pizza while reading The Wild Robot?😊

      • Jennie's avatar Jennie says:

I’d worry more about pizza on the book than pizza in the pool! BTW, I wrote to the author asking for an advanced copy of the new Wild Robot book for library reading group. I heard back from both his agent and his publicist, albeit with no success.
