I have been teaching preschool for over forty years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

    I almost suggested a children’s book about Martin Luther King, Jr. when commenting on The Poet’s Dog post. I hesitated because I did not wish to offend those who may not have the same appreciation for what Dr. King stood for as I do. The man was human and had flaws, as do we all, but this does not demean what he was trying to accomplish in our country. The book is one of a series called Ordinary People Change the World by The New York Times Best Seller author, Brad Meltzer. These books are for the K-3 group, age 5-8 years. “I am Martin Luther King, Jr.” is a book that Benjamin and I have enjoyed. There are many other “I am” books, including Jane Goodall, Jim Henson, Abraham Lincoln, Helen Keller, to name a few of the ones that we often return to. One of my favorite Dr. King quotes : “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.” Thank-you!

      I know this series, Ellen. Excellent books. Martin Luther King was one of the best. It’s hard to imagine someone who would not appreciate his wisdom, kindness, and words.

        Sadly, there are still many that do not appreciate the man or his words. In present times it has become very noticeable again. So glad that you know of the books, I find them the perfect way to introduce history to Benjamin in a fun way. Thank-you!

        Ellen, do you know the “I Was There” series of books? They are excellent, focusing on an event in history, not a person. Benjamin will love ‘being’ on the Titanic, etc.
