A Note Of Thanks

Dear Allie,

Yes, we have had two wonderful years together. You have a gigantic heart. You are Gloria’s BFF.  You adore chapter reading. I love you.

I have been teaching preschool for over forty years. This is my passion. I believe that children have a voice, and that is the catalyst to enhance or even change the learning experience. Emergent curriculum opens young minds. It's the little things that happen in the classroom that are most important and exciting. That's what I write about. I was a live guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show. I am highlighted in the seventh edition of Jim Trelease's million-copy bestselling book, "The Read-Aloud Handbook" because of my reading to children. My class has designed quilts that hang as permanent displays at the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia, the Fisher House at the Boston VA Hospital, and the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

      Thanks, Will. They don’t send in notes often, but when they do they’re pretty special. It is very hard to say goodbye to children who have been in my class for two years, especially those who are as wonderful as Allie.

    That’s so sweet! I wonder if my children think fondly…nostalgically of the little love, and inspirational notes I left them in their lunch bags?
    At the time alls I recall is them being terribly embarrassed by them, and telling me not to draw, or leave them notes in their lunches. I didn’t stop no matter how much they complained, but I stay in the car when wearing my wool plaid skirt with tall boots after Big Baby Boy’s shock and admonishing that Mother’s just don’t wear that to school to pick up their teenage sons! I didn’t get it at the time, but thought, “Oh my he’s really serious here! I better just stay in the car and assign a place to meet me!” Years later when he was in college he spilled the beans about why I couldn’t get out of the car in my wool over the knee skirt and tall boots.

    Good Lord! I had no idea teenage boys looked at Mom’s that way! My poor boy! I’m still in shock after all these years! Who knew? I didn’t change. I’m still me… Still wearing those boots, but not that skirt sadly. Time isn’t kind to aging women so I need a longer skirt. I do love my wool skirts!

      I love this story, Deborah. It is so real and true of moms, including me. Don’t we all embarrass our kids, and we’re shocked at that? I really think the lunch box notes are an endearment to them, even if they don’t let you know that. 🙂
